AEGD Rotations

Required Rotations


Consultations (Throughout the year) Denta Service 3

Consultation requests from all departments of the hospital are increasing in number. Currently up to 5-10 consultations at University Hospital are received by the dental services per week. The resident is exposed to patients with a broad range of medical and emotional conditions on the consultation service and works closely with other health professionals.




Delivering Care in Operating Room (Throughout the year)

The Division of Dental Services has one day per week of scheduled block time in the operating room at University Hospital. Each resident will be assigned to this rotation with faculty who admit patients for treatment in the operating room under general anesthesia. The dental resident under the supervision of the attending faculty will become comfortable with operating room protocol and perform all those duties related to admission and pre- and post operative care.


Southeast Heights Clinic (Throughout the year) Dental Service 4

The UNM Division of Dental Services operates a dental clinic at Van Buren Middle School which provides preventive service in a coordinated effort with the nearby UNM Southeast Heights Dental Clinic to provide restorative services while simultaneously exposing UNM students to a school-based clinic. The Van Buren dental program provides students with dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, individualized and classroom oral health education, dental exams and referrals for needed treatment. UNM maintains a coordinated group of licensed dental providers to ensure access of quality oral health care to students attending Van Buren Middle School. This program is established to improve the overall health of Van Buren Middle School students by striving to meet established program goals. Clinic site: 7525 Zuni SE, 87108.






Carrie Tingley Hospital and Special Needs Dentistry Dental Service 5

Carrie Tingley Hospital and the Department of Health Special Needs Dental Clinic (Los Lunas Community Program) are facilities dedicated to patients with special needs. Each resident will spend 2 weeks at Carrie Tingley Hospital treating special needs dental patients on an outpatient basis.













Dental Service 6

VA Hospital Albuquerque (one month)

Residents will rotate through the VA Hospital gaining experience in mainly prosthetic dentistry. Residents will gain experience in implant placement, the use of laser technology, the use of Cerec Cad-Cam technology, as well as cone beam technology during this rotation.







Rural and Public Health Rotations

Residents are required to serve 1 month-long rotation in rural New Mexico. Housing is provided at each of these sites and all the sites are linked to Albuquerque through distance learning. This provides residents with the opportunity to serve the underserved and minority populations of New Mexico:


Dental Service 7 Roswell, NM (3 days)

The dental clinic is housed at the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and patients are also treated in the operating room at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. The residents work with Dr. Cuttrell on the anesthesia side of operating room treatment. Living arrangements are provided for the resident.









Dental Service 8 Dental Servive 9 Silver City/Lordsburg, NM (one month)

The dental clinics are housed at Hidalgo Medical Services in Silver City and Lordsburg. The residents live in a house in Silver City near the downtown area. Silver City was voted “Best Small Town of New Mexico” in 2008.








Dental service 11 Albuquerque, NM (two weeks)

The dental clinic is housed at First Choice Dental. The rotation is located in southwest Albuquerque so residents do not need additional housing arrangements.
